NETGEAR Nighthawk X6 AC3200

Highly anticipated, the Netgear R8000 Nighthawk X6 AC3200 Tri-Band Wireless Wi-Fi Router is neither a disappointment nor a revelation. Presented as a major evolution of the excellent R7000, one of the brand’s best home routers, the R8000 impresses. Featuring an innovative design, it is the first tri-band Wi-Fi router with a bandwidth of 3.2 Gbps. However, it turns out that this model does not work “better” than its predecessor and even none of these excellent AC1900 routers that we tested. This is a product that will satisfy those who only use Wi-Fi 802.11ac compatible devices, provided they have a large number to see the benefit of this router. The Netgear R8000 Nighthawk X6 AC3200 is quite expensive with its price around 300 dollars.

Available in black, the Netgear R8000 is slightly larger than the R7000. He adopts a stealthy flying machine design, hence its name Nighthawk. It is however more compact than its predecessor thanks to its six retractable antennas. The concept is practical, but you must always deploy them to get the maximum range.

Apart from that, the Netgear R8000 is close to the R7000 with 5 Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000 ports (1 WAN port and 4 LAN ports) and 2 USB ports (2.0 and 3.0) on the back. On the top of the case, a row of LEDs indicate the status of ports, Wi-Fi networks and power supply. A switch can cut them if they are annoying. Under these LEDs is a button to turn on / off the Wi-Fi signal and another to enable Wi-Fi WPS protection.

Under the hood, we find the same dual-core processor at 1 GHz and support the latest Wi-Fi standards. It offers 3 Wi-Fi bands: one in 2.4 GHz to 600 Mbit / s and 2 in 5 GHz at 1300 Mbit / s. 1300 x 2 + 600, we find the 3200 attached to the name of Netgear’s product. The presence of two 5 GHz bands is a specificity which means that the R8000 can reach a total bandwidth of 3.2 Gbit / s. It is the first router of the market labeled AC3200.

NETGEAR Nighthawk X6 AC3200 Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Very powerful and fast wireless router
  • Well-built and designed
Cons
  • However, I find that the firmware has not been properly realized which prevents to reach the level of perfection expected.
  • Also, I see that it is difficult to configure, especially for amateurs, even following the guide to the letter.

The Netgear R8000 Nighthawk X6 AC3200 is an excellent router. It’s even one of the fastest we’ve seen. With this model, the builder strives for excellence. This is perhaps the problem of the R8000. It is full of features that may appear superfluous. The R8000 is intended for particularly intensive use of Wi-Fi networks and is therefore not intended for the majority of users. Its price, quite high, the reserve besides to the demanding people who do not look at the expense.

Netgear Nighthawk X4S

Discovering the Netgear AC1900 router was a great opportunity to open your eyes to the quality of the Wi-Fi provided as standard in the boxes. When testing a new version of the NightHawk, the X4S AC2600, I wanted to know how far the White Rabbit Terrier was going.

We find a similar packaging to that of the previous version with a significant visual router, mention of the model, its reference, the destination Gaming / Streaming and a cartridge summarizing the frequency of the processor and the characteristics of the network.

To its futuristic beveled appearance are added two lateral locations to fix an antenna. The vents are no longer only at the back and sides but also at the front. The router has 5-gigabits ethernet ports.

2 USB 3 ports are located on its left side and an e-sata port on the right. The appearance of a small switch to disable the indication LEDs is there users aspiring discretion in their living room for example.

The NightHawk X4S AC2600 has the characteristic of having 4 antennas. The transmission of data is carried out simultaneously by 4 streams to several users or devices of the network. By combining the possibilities of each antenna, the WiFi 802.11ac Wave 2 can reach up to 2.53 Gb / s.

Netgear Nighthawk X4S Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Good quality in terms of design and effectiveness
  • It can reach distant points and cover all areas at home or office
Cons
  • The price can be a bit expensive for some

The NightHawk X4S AC2600 is the red pill that allows you to appreciate the comfort of wireless but also its full potential in terms of services. After that the return to wifi boxes is just impossible.

D-Link AC3200

The D-Link DIR-890 is a triple band router with very good short range performance, ease of use, and a design that is out of the ordinary. It is also distinguished by its price.

The D-Link AC3200 Ultra Wi-Fi DIR-890L / R Router is unquestionably a model that is out of the ordinary. In our tests, it was fast and easy to use, offering an exceptionally stable Wi-Fi signal. Coupled with an external hard drive, it can also turn into a very good networked storage server. But at 460 dollars, it is one of the most expensive routers in its class.

Like all tri-band AC3200 routers, the DIR-890 has oversized capabilities compared to the needs of most users. But if you live in a rather small home, have a lot of Wi-Fi devices and are looking for a powerful and easy-to-use router, then you’ll be happy with this model.

Featuring a new design, the DIR-890 looks more like a drone than a router. Equipped with a red worthy of a race car, it is undoubtedly the most unusual network device that we have seen. With its dimensions (38.7 x 24.7 x 11.9 cm) and its 6 antennas, it is also one of the biggest routers on the market. In addition, unlike its rivals, these antennas are not detachable and you will not be able to replace them with more powerful third models to increase the range.

In “standard” 802.11n WiFi at 2.4 GHz, it did not shine with respectively 122 Mbit / s and 34 Mbit / s on a short and long range. These numbers are below the average of our rankings. The throughput tends to degrade over long distances because the router does not have a very good range. In general, AC3200 routers do not have as good range as other 802.11ac routers. But the D-Link is really lower than its competitors in this area. In our tests, its effective range was about 45 meters. Beyond that, it was difficult to connect and maintain a stable connection.

Asus RT-AC3200

Asus RT-AC3200 is the latest in a tri-band triband trio that competes with Netgear’s R8000 and Linksys EA9200. Like the others, this model has achieved good test results, proving to be an excellent solution for homes with large WiFi needs, but disproportionate for others. The RT-AC3200 offers a few interesting options: a complete and user-friendly web interface, excellent network monitoring features, an integrated VPN server, and the ability to connect to multiple Internet sources simultaneously. Which means it can also act as a gateway for a small business.
Compared to the other two products, the Asus offers the most. It remains to know if you really need its power to pay about 250 dollars. Most people do not need it and will not see any difference from an AC1900 router like the Asus RT-AC68U, the Netgear R7000 or the Linksys WRT1900AC. That said, there is no problem buying the RT-AC3200 if you can afford it. But in general, it is better to opt for a router that fits your needs without breaking your bank account.

Instead of increasing the speed of each of the wireless bands, Broadcom has decided to add another speed on a dual-band WiFi chip to create its 5G XStream chip that equips all AC3200 routers. That said, an AC3200 router is, for the moment, like an AC1900 router, with the bonus of a 5 GHz access point, all integrated into a single box. To be more specific, the RT-AC3200 has 3 separate access points: 1 in 2.4 GHz for all 802.11n / g / b WiFi 2.4 GHz clients capped at 600 Mbit / s; 2 5 GHz access points for 802.11ac / n / a clients capped at 1.3 Gbps. This means that despite a total bandwidth of 3.2 Gbps, the maximum router speed on a single client is 1.3 Gbps, which is equivalent to an AC1900 router.

Why two bands 5GHz then? For better bandwidth allocation for optimal speed. With two separate 5GHz bands, each high-end and low-end WiFi client can run on its own band at its maximum speed without affecting the other. In addition, these two 5GHz bands help reduce the stress on each band when many customers are fighting for the bandwidth of the router. To take a metaphor is like adding new lanes to a highway when traffic is heavy.

Asus RT-AC3200 Pros & Cons

Pros
  • ASUS RT-AC3200 offers a powerful configuration and good performance. The router offers multiple features including the ability to prevent malware from getting into the network, it can also act as a NAS or VPN server.
Cons
  • The price of the router is quite high. Its design is cumbersome and it is not possible to name the clients in the reserved IP list other than by their MAC address.

As with all AC3200 models, we only recommend the Asus RT-AC3200 to a small group of users. The reason is its WiFi performance that is not better than that of an AC1900 router while this model is very expensive. But we really appreciate its great features and ease of use. And there is not much to blame it for performance level. If you can afford it, the RT-AC3200 will give you satisfaction. But do not expect it to change the speed of your wireless network if you are already using an 802.11ac router. If you’re one of the few users with a dozen, or more, 5 GHz WiFi terminals, or if you just want to take advantage of new and useful features, then the RT-AC3200 is for you and it will make your life easier.

ASUS AC1900 Wireless

The Asus brand mainly known for its laptops and motherboards, offers us the test of its router RT-AC68UF to appreciate its knowledge in the matter. With its WIFI AC1900 dual band 2.4 GHz and AC 5GHz functions and ease of use it is supposed to allow the metamorphosis of your local network at a small price. In short, if you use multiple terminals 5 GHz WiFi, or you want to enjoy full and useful features, this midrange router can you do this service.
Note: the Wifi ac standard uses only the 5 GHz frequency band. The big advantage over the 2.4 GHz band is greater resistance to disturbances caused by electronic devices and greater ability to carry a large volume of data.
USB ports allow you to connect an external USB 3.0 hard drive and program stand-alone downloads (BT, NZB, HTTP, ED2K, DHT, PEX and magnet link support) without a computer running the Download Master function . You can also connect a USB device (the second port is USB 2.0) as a camera or a printer with a USB port, which will then be shared and usable by computers connected to the network.
The USB port can also be used to connect a 3G or 4G key (not supplied). The router can thus have a high-speed connection or a second backup connection in case of break of the line.

The EZQoS function makes it possible to manage the bandwidth sharing between the different applications; just click a button on the router interface to allocate more bandwidth to the telephony application you need, for example.
To gain security, in addition to the firewall and parental filter, in addition to controlled access to the interface via HTTPs and access limitation based on a daily schedule, the router allows you to create different guest accesses on Wifi networks. It also allows you to create your own VPN to secure a connection to the outside.

ASUS AC1900 Wireless Pros & Cons

Pros
  • This wireless router is equipped with 5 Gigabit LAN ports providing maximum throughput.
  • WiFi performance is exceptional, even with a high number of connected clients.
  • The web interface is one of the most intuitive I’ve seen on a router. Simplicity and efficiency.
Cons
  • The price might be high for some users.
  • The location of the USB port is not very convenient.
  • The RT-AC68U router is compatible with all Wifi solution. It is able to connect to all devices Wifi but with a bonus: it is compatible with the new Wifi standard ac.

This router can also be used to connect one or more devices without Wifi ac to the network of another RT-AC68U. It will then work in bridge mode.
